<p>But why are so many people overweight today? A big reason is that the majority of peoples diets consists of processed foods. This &#8220;fake&#8221; food is also contributing to the increasing &#8220;life threatening&#8221;conditions facing many obese people today. Conditions such as heart disease, hypertension and diabetes. Conditions that are robbing quality of life.</p>
<p>We need to get over this idea of changing everything overnight. Remember, we want to do this the quick way. And the quickest way to succeed is to progress one manageable step at a time. You will not change poor eating habits overnight. It is too easy to develop bad eating habits, especially with all the deceptive, so called &#8220;healthy foods&#8221; the food giants are pushing on us. To successfully make and keep good food choices will require making small and gradual changes to your diet.</p>
<p>Your breakfast choices can be a perfect starting point to make some changes. Have a bowl of oatmeal with fruit instead of a bowl of chocolate frosted sugar bombs. Maybe accompany it with some nitrate/nitrite free bacon. If you find that you are eating out every night, perhaps you can start to prepare healthy meals at home once or twice a week. And when you do eat out, have a tasty salad with your sandwich instead of fries every second meal. If you make a small change every two weeks that you can keep in place, it wont be very long till your bad eating habits will be non existent.</p>
<p>Eating good, healthy food will give you more energy, and start the weight loss ball rolling. But if you do nothing to increase your metabolic rate, eventually your weight loss will slow down. Maybe do some star jumps before jumping into the shower. You changed your eating habits one step at a time. Now you can add to your exercise routine, one step at a time. As your fitness level improves, you will need to add more to your routine, if you want to continue to see improvements.</p>

<p>Lisa: Scott, what&#8217;s a common misconception about losing stomach fat and getting a six pack of abs?</p>
<p>Scott: The most common misconception that most people mistakenly believe is that they can do a few crunches everyday and that&#8217;s it. Unfortunately, that&#8217;s just not true. In order to really lose stomach fat you need to put on lean muscle tissue through strengthening exercises, do some high intensity interval training and watch your diet. Doing crunches alone is not going to get you a flat stomach.</p>
<p>Lisa: So, it&#8217;s a combination of diet, exercise and building muscle? What are some exercises we can do that are more effective for losing stomach fat?</p>
<p>Scott: One of my favorite exercises, that I recommend as a far superior abdominal exercise, is the push-up.</p>
<p>Lisa: Why do you recommend push ups?</p>
<p>Scott: There are many reasons why. The most important one is consistency. When you get into a proper push-up position with your back straight your abs have to work the entire time to support your body. When you lower your body in a push-up and when you lift it, at no point in time are your abdominal muscles relaxing. This is very different from when you are doing a crunch. During a crunch, your abdominals are relaxed, during a great deal of the exercise. It is not until you raise your body up, that the abdominals are engaged. As a result your stomach muscles are relaxed, making it harder to lose stomach fat.</p>
<p>Lisa: Are their other reasons for using push ups instead of crunches for losing stubborn stomach fat?</p>
<p>Scott: Another reason to use a push up instead of crunches to lose stomach fat is that you are also getting a great upper body workout. The push ups increase strength and stability to your stomach, helping you to lose stomach fat. This creates leaner muscle tissue as well as working your chest, shoulders and triceps.</p>
<p>Another benefit of using push-ups instead of crunches is that it takes less time than doing crunches and push ups. So many times I see people in the gym, do crunches and then go on to do push-ups? Why do both? Why not use one of the seven variations of push-ups, which are perfect for losing stomach fat without wasting time on crunches. Your time is valuable, and if you are like most people you definitely want to do more in less time. Using push-ups instead of crunches to lose stomach fat helps you to accomplishes that.</p>
<p>Lisa: Scott, thank you so much for your time today, and for your suggestions, and the benefits of those suggestions, on losing stomach fat without having to do crunches. Most people hate the dreaded sit up exercise anyway, so it is good to know we have more effective alternatives that will also shorten our workout, giving us more time to do the other things we enjoy.</p>
